Working for state revenue increases


CCH staff joined other organizations in Springfield today to host a legislative breakfast. Our collective message to legislators encouraged support of House Bill 174, a sensible way to responsibly meet the revenue requirements of our state.

Final settlement order in Hill v. Erickson class action


Today, Judge Patrick McGann, Presiding Judge of the County Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County, entered a final order approving settlement in Hill v.

Supreme Court strips Provena hospital chain of its tax-exempt status


On March 18, the Illinois Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that strips tax-exempt status from a major healthcare provider. This court decision could result in thousands of people having access to the medical care they need as hospitals are legally held to their charitable missions.

Provena Health, a 6-hospital system based in south suburban Mokena, has owed roughly $1 million a year in property taxes since Champaign County took away the exemption of its Urbana facility in 2003.

Homeless programs would see dramatic state cutbacks


Gov. Quinn announced his proposed FY 2011 state budget yesterday, which included more cuts to schools and human service agencies already struggling to stay afloat. 

300 from Sweet Home Chicago rally for ordinance, introduced with 18 aldermanic sponsors


Sweet Home Chicago drew 300 supporters to City Hall March 10 to make known their presence and their passion for our affordable housing ordinance. We came from nine community groups and three labor unions to rally in support and witness the introduction of an ordinance with 18 aldermanic sponsors.

A step ahead for homeless students


An excellent piece of legislation is moving through the Illinois General Assembly. With 10 "yes" votes, and no "no"votes, House Bill 4755 introduced by Rep. Cynthia Soto (D-Chicago) passed out of the House Education Committee on March 10. 

CCH leader testifies at tonight's poverty elimination hearing

Chicago Coalition for the Homeless is participating in tonight’s public hearing hosted by the Illinois Commission on the Elimination of Poverty.
 
The commission is developing a "poverty elimination strategy" to halve the number of Illinoisans living in extreme poverty by 2015. This is to be done according to international human rights standards. Testimony is being collected during three public hearings across Illinois.
 

College aid for unaccompanied youth


It is that time of year when high school seniors busy themselves filling out college applications and the FAFSA. But for the estimated 26,000 of unaccompanied homeless youth throughout Illinois, barriers to applying for financial aid and attending college can seem insurmountable.

Rashmi Ramaswamy, Breaking Barriers!

CCH is proud to announce that Rashmi Ramaswamy, co-president of the CCH Board of Directors, is being honored next month by the Chicago Foundation for Women.

CCH nominated Rashmi for the prestigious Breaking Barriers award, given by the foundation's Asian American Leadership Council.
