Horizons is a creative writing workshop program dedicated to helping participants find their creative voices through poetry, expressive writing, and storytelling. Founded in 2007 by Director of Organizing Wayne Richard, Horizons seeks to break down the barriers that often exist between people by bringing them together to explore each other’s unique perspectives.

Horizons is about empowerment—both for its writers and those experiencing their work.

CCH organizers offer Horizons classes twice a month at several transitional shelters and supportive living programs within the Chicago area.

Annual Showcase

CCH hosts an annual showcase at the American Writers Museum in downtown Chicago. Horizons participants perform their creative writing pieces for CCH leaders, staff, Board members, family, and friends. The event often features interpretational artwork to complement the performance, in collaboration with students and staff from Adler University’s art therapy program.

Past showcases can be viewed online.

When you read poetry, it helps you. Because I love it now. I read not only my poetry, I read other people’s poetry.

Writing poetry, this is bigger than me. When I write, it’s not just about me expressing myself. Who am I going to touch with these words?
