Educational Rights
for Students in Temporary Living Situations

You can receive additional help from your public school if your family is:
- Staying temporarily with others in their housing (doubled-up) due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason
- Living in an emergency or transitional shelter, on the street, in a car, or in a similar situation
- Living in a motel, hotel, trailer park, or campground due to the lack of adequate accommodations
- Living in any other place not regularly used as a place to live
If one of the above situations applies to your family, your child has a right to:
- Stay in the school they were last enrolled in or the school they attended when they were last permanently housed (this is called the “school of origin”)
- Enroll in the attendance area school for the address where you are currently staying
- Immediately enroll in school even without normally required documents such as birth certificates, immunization records, and transcripts
- Priority enrollment in preschool programs
- Free school meals and waivers so you won’t have to pay school fees and fines
- Free transportation to and from their school of origin or if needed to reliably access the school
- Tutoring services
