Here are 5 things you can do to help folks experiencing homelessness

Individuals and families experiencing homelessness, both citizens and non-citizens alike, are particularly vulnerable to the dangerous actions of the current administration. Here are some practical things that you can do to protect our neighbors:
1

Support our mutual aid fund.

We know that putting money directly into the hands of people experiencing homelessness makes a difference! CCH offers $500 emergency grants to individuals and families experiencing and at risk of homelessness. Donate today!
2

Support or join a mutual aid group or organization in your neighborhood.

Many of these groups are organizing school watches to keep students safe when leaving and arriving to school, coordinating delivery of meals and other goods for neighbors that feel unsafe leaving their home/encampment, creating funds for people impacted by ICE raids, and more depending on what individuals in the community need.
3

Attend a Know Your Rights (KYR) training

from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR). These trainings are open to individuals, organizations, and groups and are available in person or virtually. They include information like understanding different types of warrants and how to record and document ICE. Scheduling a Know Your Rights (KYR) presentation here.
4

Document and report any ICE activity you witness

by calling the ICIRR Family Support Network at 855-435-7693.
5

Support your neighbors living in encampments or other outdoor locations

  • Tell your alderperson to not displace residents!
  • Get to know the people living there and ask them what they need. Don’t drop off food or clothing without someone explicitly asking for it. Leaving food or clothing without speaking to someone who needs it directly may draw unnecessary attention to an encampment by local and federal law enforcement.
  • Support CCH’s response work.
