ࡱ> )+(a jbjb11 "[[ffff r &^``````, R_ ~^^^^^^^^^^~ qȍfL^^0^ ^ ^^For Immediate Release April 2007 OAK PARK ATTORNEY & TEEN VOLUNTEER HONORED Nominated by a teen volunteer, a public interest attorney from Oak Park who works on behalf of homeless children has been named a Lincolnland Legend by a statewide scholarship association. Patricia Nix-Hodes, associate director of the Law Project at the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, was honored by Illinois Dollars for Scholars. She was nominated in an essay written by Emily Hanneman, an Oak Park River Forest High School senior who has volunteered at the coalition the last two summers. With 435 students participating in the essay contest, Hannemans essay was chosen the statewide runner-up and the 7th Congressional District winner. It earned the Oak Park teen $4,500 in scholarships that she will use to attend Michigans Kalamazoo College this fall. The 2007 contest asked high school students to nominate someone from their home district who works to better the community through education. Students and their nominees from 16 congressional districts were honored at an April 21 ceremony at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield. Nix-Hodes was cited for long-time advocacy on behalf of homeless children and teens who face roadblocks when they try to attend public school. Homeless students are entitled to immediate enrollment in public schools, either the school they attended before becoming homeless or a school near where the child is now living, as guaranteed since 1987 under the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Dollars for Scholars also presented $500 donations to a schools designated by the adults named Lincolnland Legends. Nix-Hodes selected the Chicago Public Schools Dunbar High School, which will award the money as a scholarship to a 2007 graduate who experienced homelessness. The CCH Law Project also offers its own college scholarship program for homeless teens, a summer event on which Hanneman volunteered.
